we finally finished our project. obviously there are things we would have liked to work on longer, esp the final shot, but we are happy with the overall outcome. working as a group taught us a lot, especially how to manage files and work with models and scenes that other people created. here is the link to the final

Update: October 10th

With only 8 days left in the quarter, we are well on our way into rendering. SCAD’s RenderFarm can’t quite handle the density of our scenes, so we’ve decided to render locally. We found a rather secluded lab and created our own little farm.

Here’s a sneak peak at some of the faces we’ve been getting from people entering “our” lab:

It’s going to be a long weekend. :)

It’s been a while since an update, pretty much because we don’t have much to show until everything is rendered. Shot 1 is very close to being done, shot 2 is done, and shot 3 is on its way. We’ve run into some terrible and expected problems. The renders are taking forever….which makes sense since we’re rendering a whole freaking city, but the renderfarm barely works, so we’ve had to resort to taking up entire classrooms during the night to batch render. Hopefully I will be posting a finished piece by Saturday or so, that will give us some solid days to do the breakdown.

We had a critique class 15. This is the video we showed.

studio 1 class 15 from Leighana Ginther on Vimeo.

We’ve run into some (expected) problems. There is a noticable amount of flickering in shot 1, which carries into shot 3.I have a feeling a lot of the flickering is coming from the brick texture as well. We’ve made significant progress on shot 3 which now includes a pullout into a child’s room. Each shot needs tweaking on shaders and texturing. The lighting in this video was very temporary and is going to change a lot by the final. Render times aren’t too crazy right now but this project will need a lot of planning so we’re not scrambling at the end of the quarter to get this thing done.
We have started using the zdepth channel generated from maya to set up our tilt shift in nuke. It’s working much better than previous tests but still needs fine tuning for the final.
The final shot still needs a lot of work, as it is the big finale. The table needs to look a lot more realistic. We’re going to put more toys on the shelves and floor. The layout of the city is going to change a bit. We also had a pretty cool idea to put a city outside of the window….which is kind of recursive to the whole theme.

We’re going to shoot for getting this thing ready to render by monday.

Last update before class 15! Ok, so we’ve come to the decision that our project would be too confusing without an ending. We are now doing a fourth shot, which is really just a continuation of the third shot. The camera will zoom out of the now obvious toy city in shot 3 and reveal that the city is actually a creation of a child on top of a toy table. It will show a section of a child’s room.
We have decided to import the child’s room and the rest of the city into shot 3. I realize we’ll probably have some render issues considering how dense the scene will be. Hopefully we will be rendering soon enough to solve any problems that might occur. As far as continuity goes, we’re going to puts some subtle toys and more saturated objects into shot 1.

shot2

shot3 (not much has changed since last update, road texture will be fixed soon)

conclusion shot(showing the zoom out)

child’s room(toy city will be on play table)

List of things to do this weekend:
-modeling and texturing of child’s room
-finalized lighting on all shots
-complete edit of shots including music
-final tilt shift done in Nuke
-set up layers for rendering
-start animation

helllo! It’s been a while since an update. Yes, we are still alive. So we’re a little bit behind schedule (ahh!). So texturing on shots 1 and 3 are done. Some things will need tweaking, we’ll start to figure that out once we do some more lighting, animation, and look development. I’ve started to light shot 3 and have a basic rig down. Our biggest issue at this point (and will be until we’re done) is getting down the continuity of the shots.

shot 1 progress, texturing done lighting next

shot 2
coming soon

shot 3 beginning of lighting

Update: October 20th

The texturing for Shot 1 is definitely coming along. We’ll be able to start lighting soon!
